I discovered what was then called Digitally Imported only a few months after it launched in 1999. Free radio over the internet? Incredible! DJ AJG was a New York City DJ who got some of his mixes played on the station. He used to have a website where you could download his mixes, which were exactly the style of trance I wanted to hear.

A friend of a friend of a friend made this mix for the drive to Burning Man 2001. There was no tracklist and I only recognized the last two. It wasn't until apps like Shazam came along that I was able to identify some of the rest. Of course, my three favorite tracks from this mix are the ones that are still ID - ID.

, and when the breakdown arrived, my brain had actually expected to hear the vocals from Drift
. So I mashed them together, and the result is one of those sum-is-greater-than-the-parts situations.

I had made some rudimentary mixes before this one, nothing much more complicated than a little overlapping and crossfading. This was the first mix I made with beatmatching and knob-twiddling. I barely knew what I was doing but I think it turned out quite well.

This was the start of a mix that never got finished. I was experimenting with harmonic mixing and obsessed over the smallest details in this one, lots of little edits and tweaks to each track. I still think the transition from If You Should Go
to Let The Light Shine In
is some of my finest work. But then I couldn't figure out how to follow up Tuvan
. Days passed, and then weeks. And eventually I decided it would be a finished unfinished mix.

I had to make a five hour solo car drive, so I picked a bunch of tracks I wanted to hear booming in the car stereo. I quickly arranged them into a play order that I thought would sound good. And it did! When I got home, on a whim, I started mixing some of the tracks together, quick and dirty, nothing but beatmatching, crossfades, and the occassional bit of looping. And after six or seven tracks, it sounded good, so I kept going!
