I love how you're giving not just your playlists, but also telling us what you think on the tracks. Your experience, how you learned about these tracks and lists, is very interesting to follow.

I admit I've not listened to all the tracks you've played/listed, but it's keeping me interested in your whole deal :D

Please keep it up!

Thanks Ezriilc! That's one of music's superpowers, yeah? The way strong emotions and memories can get attached to specific songs. :)

Linkin Park - Shadow Of The Day (Blake Jarrell Remix)

AYDA - Pharaoh (James Dymond Remix)
Harmonic Rush & Ahmed Romel - Sevda
Simon Patterson - Smack (John Askew Remix)
Harmonic Rush - Salvia
Bart Claessen - Hartseer

Had the computer randomly pick some tracks and then I tried to arrange them into a semi-coherent playlist. It was a fun challenge, one that I'll do again.

A couple months ago, I stumbled across this 45 minute examination of Call On Me. It's a fascinating story and worth a watch.

The Dream Traveler - Time
Three Drives On A Vinyl - Greece 2000
Tilt vs Paul van Dyk - Rendezvous (Quadrophonic Mix)
Gus Gus - Purple (Sasha vs The Light)
Ascension - Someone (Slacker's Elevation Vocal vs Vocal Mix)
Agnelli & Nelson - El Niño (Matt Darey Remix)
Energy 52 - Café Del Mar (Three 'N One Remix)
Binary Finary - 1998
Paul van Dyk - Words (For Love)
Lost Tribe - Gamemaster
Transa - Enervate

A Paul Oakenfold mix from 1998, the same year he was voted #1 DJ in the world by readers of DJ Magazine. In 2012, Rolling Stone listed this as #23 in their 30 Greatest EDM Albums Ever. Ever? I'm not sure about that. But if you want a mix that is representative of trance in 97/98, this isn't a bad pick.

One of the great things about trance is how many subgenres it has. About ten years ago, I was growing tired of how much of the trance I was hearing was becoming harsher and brasher. That led me into listening to more psytrance which has the repetitive and hypnotic sound I enjoy. A few years after that, I discovered progressive house, which has an even more minimal sound without the acid and pew-pews. Don't get me wrong; I still like plenty of honks and screeches. But sometimes you just need something a little more mellow.

Psytrance often has some obscure and bizarre samples. Here's the one from The F Word!

Grace - Not Over Yet (BT's Spirit Of Grace)

Along with Northern Exposure 2, this was the other mix that introduced me to trance. I vividly remember hearing it for the first time. It was late July 1998. My roomate and I had been listening to Hello Nasty non-stop for a couple weeks when a friend from Ottawa visited for the weekend and said you should listen to this. Wow. This immediately became a favourite of mine.

For four brief years, from 1997 to 2001, Ottawa had a legendary club called Atomic. Max Graham would often spin some epic sets there. On a Friday night, on May 1, 1998, he performed the first ten tracks live, mixing from vinyl. Later, he added the final track in the studio, and Atomic released the mix as a promotional CD on Canada Day, July 1, 1998. It was given the great title of A Delicate Sound Of Many.

KMFDM - Anarchy
KMFDM - Mercy
KMFDM - Unfit
KMFDM - Megalomaniac (Excessive Force)
KMFDM - D.I.Y
KMFDM - Adios

During their Wax Trax! era, for many years each KMFDM album was an better than the last. I feel this peaked with Nihil, which has a perfect balance of guitars and electronics, horns and backing vocals, and callbacks and references to older material. As En Esch's and Günter Schulz's contributions lessened, the next three albums got progressively weaker until the band broke up in 1999.

Aerosmith - What It Takes

Until my musical tastes changed in the early 90s, I listened to a lot of Aerosmith. I have two specific memories. I remember calling in sick, skipping work, and going to pick up Get A Grip the day it was released. A friend and I got to the record store just as it opened. Afterwards, we were walking around the mall and there was a virtual reality demo. Remember, this was 1993. In the real world, we each stood on a ringed platform, headset on, and holding a grip with a single button. In the virtual world, we were two gunslingers shooting at each other. The graphics were very rough polygons, but it was incredibly immersive. "Wow, this is the future!" we thought. As chance would have it, the video for Amazing would also feature virtual reality. The second memory is also work related. We were on a bus ride to a team building exercise. Someone had brought along a radio to keep us entertained during the drive. What It Takes came on and someone started singing along. I joined in and, before long, almost everyone on the bus were singing together. That brought us together as a team far better than any contrived corporate exercises ever could.
