Dolmen's Myst / Uru Story

I can't add to the history of music in the cavern since I first wandered down into it
in November of 2007. But I can give a perspective on what it was like to discover there was music in cavern beyond the soundtracks in the ages.

I joined up on Gametap just to play URU online. I had just finished up playing Myst, Riven and MystIII for the third go around and wanted more. I did a search and stumbled across URU online in a Wiki. After doing a little reading about the place I thought "well that sounds interesting".
So I signed up and started playing as just a visitor. It was a
bit confusing at first but I soon figured out what I could do. I also discovered that there was this very active online community going in the game.

It was then I noticed that
there was this place named "Karaoke Bevin".  I never visited that Bevin during those first weeks of playing as a visitor and later as an explorer. But the name stuck with me, and the thought, "Do they really do karaoke there?". Like many an explorer, after having completed the ages, got the relto pages, got the shirts, the hats and those "sparklies"; I found myself bored with game and wondering "What else is there to do?".

One Saturday night, after spending some time wandering the ages I went to hang out in the GoG. While listening to people's talk I heard someone say "Well I am off, going to the Karaoke party".
I decided then to go see what this Karaoke Bevin was all about.
I linked in and before me were all these people dancing on the fountain. Very odd. What are they doing?
It wasn't long though before I was welcomed by Swifthawk and sent
the URL for urutunes.com. I had no idea that there was such a thing as Shoutcast so the concept that I could listen to music and attend a party while in the cavern was nothing short of a revelation to me. I went to the URL, connected and soon was listening to music.

Now those people dancing on the fountain made sense to me, I could
see, or hear as may be, what they were dancing to.   I soon was dancing myself and really enjoying the music. I can be a bit dense at times, as those who know me can vouch for, so at first I wasn't aware I was listening to music done by the some of the people at that very party. I thought it was just a stream of various pieces until I noticed people congratulating someone named MusicteacherSheff on doing such a good job singing. Huh, I thought, there is someone over there by the fountain with that name. It dawned on me then what Karaoke was all about, a gathering of people to share and share in the making of music.
I was
astounded by the talent present in that Bevin that night.

After that first Karaoke night I was hooked. I have missed very few since then. I look forward to each because I have such a good time. My wife and daughter find it very amusing to see me on the computer Saturday nights, headphones on, tapping away a beat and humming (or singing badly off key they say, though I disagree) while playing URU. I look forward to each night also because I love to hear the new work presented each week.  I love Karaoke. I love all the other music events also. I find I spend little time doing much else other than listening and dancing to the streams of urutunes.com, and doing the occasional Delin run.

I would like to thank all of the folks at urutunes.com for being here. You may not be the ones who lit the torch, but you are the ones carrying it now. You make the experience of URU more than just an online game. So much more than just an online game.
